Care of the Mouth After an Extraction

  • Apply pressure on the extraction site with gauze for 30-45 minutes
  • NO smoking, straws, vigorous rinsing or excessive spitting
  • You may experience some swelling and discomfort. To reduce swelling: ice packs off and on for 24-48 hours
  • Drink plenty of fluids and maintain a soft food diet
  • NO alcohol, aspirin or hot liquids
  • Brush and floss, but avoid toothpaste by the extraction site
  • Warm salt water rinses the following day: 6 oz water with ½ tsp salt•If you have prolonged or severe swelling, bleeding, discomfort, or fever, call 466-9638

Over the counter medications can be taken along with any prescribed pain medication, alternating every 3 hours. Example: 600mg Ibuprofen, 3 hours later Hydrocodone, 3 hours later 600 mg Ibuprofen again.
